of slaves and masters-the progressive soul (part one)   Leave a comment

Ayn Rand is enjoying a renaissance of sorts thanks to the Tea Party revolution and the Progressive victory which is symbolized by our current cultural and economic crisis.  Hidden between layers of public discussion about Rand’s influence on Tea Partiers, her role in Alan Greenspan’s disastrous handling of the Federal Reserve, and her radical views of independence and free will –and all but forgotten even by her admirers– is her  laser-accurate psychological assessment of the soul of the modern progressive.  In the 1943 novel The Fountainhead, Rand presents her first fully developed view of the independent man (and his antagonist, who she calls a “collectivist”).  From an excerpt in which the “collectivist” (today’s modern progressive) confesses his methods, his motivation, and his goal to one of his victims:

“It’s not my fault if you couldn’t hear.  You could, of course.  You didn’t want to….I said I intended to rule  Like all my spiritual predecessors…I inherited the fruit of their efforts…I recognize it.  I don’t like it…Enjoyment is not my destiny…I shall rule…

The soul…must be broken…get your fingers on it—and the man is yours…see if i ever lied to you….  See if you haven’t heard this all for years, but didn’t want to hear, and the fault is yours, not mine…kill integrity…preach selflessness…tell a man he must live for others…he’ll obey …he can’t trust himself, he feels uncertain, he feels unclean…set up standards of achievement open to all..and you stop the impetus to effort in all men, great or small…don’t set out to raze all shrines…enshrine mediocrity..and the shrines are razed..make them feel..a personal desire is evil…{where} “I want”  …is no longer a natural right, but a shameful admission… where there’s service, there’s someone being served…the man who speaks to you of sacrifice speaks of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master…if you..hear a man telling you that you must be happy, that it’s your natural right…—that will be the man who’s not after your soul.”

When was the last time that a leader or would-be leader from either party spoke of natural rights?  Integrity?  Personal desires?  That we must be happy..that its our right and our duty to ourselves?  We are living in the age of the collectivist, and his voice is rising ever louder around us, just as his moral code and the society built upon it is collapsing around him (and us):

first lady michelle obama: “barack will never let you go back to your lives as usual (“I said i intended to rule—tell a man he must live for others”)

Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery: “and while we sow the seeds of greed” (“make them feel a personal desire is evil”)

“Service is never a simple act; it’s about sacrifice for others”—Former President George Bush—(“preach selflessness…tell a man he must live for others”)

“Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice.”-Former President Woodrow Wilson—(“the man who speaks of sacrifice speaks of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master”)

The history and the stated goals of early progressives have been written about and discussed ad nauseum for decades-from their direct ties to social Darwinism and eugenics to Prohibition, slavery, and Jim Crow-they are not necessary to go over once again.  I wish, instead, to peer into the soul of the progressive, via history and progressivism’s end game.

What are the self-professed “principles” of modern progressives?  What are their methods, and what would be the end game, if one can be discerned from their current agenda?

From then candidate Obama complaining about conservatives “clinging to their guns and religion” (despite the fact that both are deeply ingrained in our culture and sacrosanct within the Constitution)  to the crudeness with which the wingnuts on the left attacked sarah palin when she was announced as the 2008 vice presidential candidate and haven’t let up , the progressive left mocks and smears all those with principled opposition to their agenda.  With apologies to Nancy “the tea partiers are astroturf” Pelosi  and Rahm “liberal opponents of obamacare  are fucking retards” Emmanuel, but insults and smears do NOT make a substitute for a rational argument..so what are you actually up to?

Lefty blogs, commentators, and celebrities are tying their brains as well as their panties in a bunch trying to equate all opposition to the progressive agenda as motivated by racism and populated by illiterates despite all evidence to the contrary. The advocates of  limited government, individualism, and personal responsibility are racially diverse and are motivated by philosophical principles that belong to no particular race and are not exactly accessible to the intellectually lazy, arrogant, or willfully ignorant– so what’s the real agenda behind  the classism and race-baiting? And who are the intended target?

Progressives of both parties espouse tolerance, demand bi-partisanship, and celebrate  social justice and equality.  Of what do they wish tolerance, over what are we supposed to compromise, and precisely what means are to be employed to reach “justice”?

The Progressive hatred of Capitalism,  of equality of opportunity (rather than of results), individual rights (as opposed to collective ones), and any ethic other than “the greatest good for the greatest number” is well established.  Where does progressivism lead, if the state is to make all manner of decisions both large  and small.  They continue in their policies and media campaign to declare “we will tell you what health care plan you must have (and you MUST have one) and what’s more we will tell you what is an acceptable and commendable belief to hold.   For what purpose does progressivism ask the nation to accept the unacceptable (spend trillions upon trillions of dollars borrowed from our enemies while we are bankrupt and in debt to those enemies)?  Why do they continue to proclaim the absurd (those trillions of borrowed dollars will get us out of that debt!)? What could possibly be the reason that progressives brazenly predict equality and justice while believing that those who have endured “historical inequities” are a bit more equal than those who supposedly have not?  What might be gained by asserting that those with whom one has a diametrically opposed view must come together with you and find common ground (when there is none)?  what is the nature of those who will accept without criticism the celebration of violence, materialistic excess and the abandonment of all sense of responsibility and self regard?

What is the nature of the progressive soul?
