discovering morality (or: finding the way to save the republic)   Leave a comment

It is frequently suggested that those who are
motivated by ideology are somehow naive-or at least
ill-equipped to deal with real issues-and we frequently
believe that those who propose ideas based on
ideology or philosophy have some hidden motive.
This is the fatal error in our thinking that is underlying
every atrocity, bad decision, and failed policy ever
made by our leadership. It is also the fatal error we
make in our personal lives. Ideas DO matter. It is
ideas, not circumstance or acts of nature, that shape
individual lives and thus the world.

It is true that the field of philosophy has become a
joke to many. It seems that every place we turn for
real answers we hear absurdities like “that depends
on what your definition of is is”; or find professors
and experts in every field of endeavor discussing such
“profound” notions as “does reality actually exist”; or
“can we prove anything”. When faced with such
statements we are correct to suppose that if such is
the nature of the realm of ideas than all is certainly
lost.

We give up on the realm of ideas at our own peril, and
we deliver our nation into the hands of those who
propose such insanities deliberately, in order to
disguise their own purposes.

Galileo did not determine that the earth was not, in
fact, the center of the universe by giving up on ideas;
he embraced them. The ancient Greeks did not define
the laws of logic by giving up on ideas, they embraced
them. The industrial revolution and the rise of
western civilization did not occur by men giving up on
ideas, they embraced them. Our nation was not
founded by men who gave up on ideas, it was founded
on ideas; and those ideas are in danger of being lost.

There was a fatal flaw in the thinking of the men of
the Enlightenment who founded our Republic: They
did not, and could not, name or define the foundation
upon which America was built, and it is that error
which has delivered her into the hands of her
enemies. Please note that in the pages which deal
with the Republican and Democratic parties platform
that what is missing is a discussion of ethics. Ethics
is the branch of philosophy that deals with the
questions “what are values?”; and “how does one
gain or keep them?”

It is a proper answer to these questions that must be
addressed if our nation is to be rescued from the
brink. It is the answer to these questions that our
leaders dare not attempt to address, as it is they who
have no answers and it is with the barrel of a gun that
they are attempting to convince us not to look for any
